I have been thinking about barriers.
What are the 3 to 5 major barriers that exist that keeps us from exchanging data as effectively as other industries (e.g., banking, logistics, retail)? I am very close to the problems so I understand the hundreds of reasons at the detail level but I want to try to boil the barriers down into the things that we must address as a nation and an industry to change the landscape of health information integration and interoperability.

Wow, interesting question. Some thoughts...
- Competition. Let's be honest, do hospitals, physicians, etc. have competitive reasons not to share data
- Consumer demand. Are consumers demanding this, or are they somewhat oblivious to the need? Let's get the consumers (patients)involved. I think if they know why this is important, they will voice their opinions.
- Motivation. I think the ARRA (Federal Stimulus Package) just created this. I'm optimistic this will help.
